| Bacuag, a coastal town 44 kilometers
from Surigao City, existed as a municipal corporate body
during the Spanish regime. It became a barrio in 1904
and was placed under the municipality of Gigaquit for
administration. In 1918, it was recreated into a separate
municipality with the late Lucas Patiņo as the appointed
municipal President.
In 1970 the town's population of more than 12,000
was composed mostly of Boholanos who immigrated to the
place. They depend on Agriculture and fishing for their
livelihood.
Bacuag's own electric lighting system was installed
in 1960.
Like many of the municipalities in Surigao del Norte,
Bacuag had had its experience of being badly hit by
typhoons. One of the typhoons that badly hit the municipality
was Louise (1964 ) which wrought havoc on the coconut
plantations and public improvements like the municipal
building, schoolhouses, wharf, feeder roads, bridges
and kiosko and private dwellings of the inhabitants.
Before typhoon Louise wrought havoc copra production
in this municipality was recorded to have reached 20
tons daily, but after the typhoon with the plantations
still recovering a ton of copra could hardly be produced.
