| Tagana-an was created way back in the seventeenth century,
the third earliest town in the province of Surigao. The
town was inhabited with few families who built their homes
near the mouth of the river now called embarcadero. The
earliest settlers were people who evaded the Moro pirates.
Tagana-an is a good place to stay and safe from the moro
pirates.
As years go by more families settled in the place.
The people called this place "Tago-anan" which means
hiding place.
In the early part of the of the eighteenth century
people from other provinces, especially Leyte and Bohol
came to stay in the town. The name was changed from
"Tago-anan" to "Tagana-an" meaning "preparation for".
The town westward became big and thickly populated.
Lands were donated for the church, town plaza, and the
Municipal Hall.
During the war years, from 1942 - 1945, Tagana-an
played the role again as the hiding place. This became
the haven of food exchange during the war years.
Tagana-an was returned into a town on July 20, 1947
and people rejoiced very much because they have long
dreamed to be separated from Placer, the mother town.
