Retrospect

The Tavern was established in 1946 by Mr. and Mrs. Domingo and Aida Alvarez as a restaurant providing overnight accommodation mostly to American GIs coming from the war.

Growing with Surigao, The Tavern has become both a historical landmark and personal witness to the triumphs and trials of the city and its people. For a very long time, the Tavern was the only hotel in Surigao. Visitors to Surigao never would fail to recall and reminisce their own fond personal memories while staying at the Tavern. Situated at the seaside boulevard near the port of Surigao surrounded by various commercial and entertainment centers, and frequented by locals, visiting businessmen, and foreign tourists, the Tavern atmosphere was always a rich milieu of business and pleasure.

As early as September 2003, a new group of investors discussed assisting Mrs. Aida Alvarez in the operation of the Tavern.

The new Hotel Tavern family officially was born on November 16, 2004, when the management and staff took over all aspects of operations.
To date, the hotel now has more than two dozen employees and part-timers all based in Surigao with additional skilled craftsmen from Cebu working exclusively for hotel renovations. The hotel is now managed by a professional staff and supported by a lean workforce with additional manpower from an outsource pool. The hotel staff now delivers improved service, optimizing work efficiency through multi-tasking and multi-lateral competencies.)

Hotel Tavern Surigao is planned to become an upscale, full-service hotel facility expected to contain 22 or more rentable units, adequate meeting and function space, a full-service restaurant, a lobby lounge, an exercise room, an outdoor swimming pool, a business center, a gift shop, and back-of-the-house facilities typically found in an upscale, full-service hotel of this type.

Recent marketing and human resource innovations by management include the posting of the Hotel Tavern website (http://www.surigaoislands.com/tavernhotel), accreditation by TESDA as a training hotel and future assessment center. The Surigao City government has recently acknowledged Hotel Tavern to be the most proactive business and tourism promoter in the community.

Hotel Tavern’s new operation is slowly bringing back its old customers as well as winning new ones. The hotel is poised to take her place as the premier hotel of Surigao-not only its first and favorite, but also becoming its finest hotel.
