Port of Surigao Recognized with Green Port Award from APEC
The Port of Surigao was recently honored with the Green Port Award System (GPAS) from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Port Services Network. This recognition was achieved by meeting the GPAS scorecard criteria, earning the port a GPAS certificate and badge.
Manager Froilan Caturla highlighted that the port's success in obtaining this award reflects its dedication to principles such as energy conservation, noise reduction, and the protection and preservation of the surrounding environment. This recognition has placed the Port of Surigao among just thirteen others in the Asia Pacific Region, setting an example for environmental stewardship.
Caturla also praised the Philippines' commitment to environmental sustainability, noting that with three distinguished GPAS awardees—Cagayan de Oro, Batangas, and now Surigao—the nation stands out as a champion of environmental stewardship and sustainable growth.
Established in 2016, GPAS serves as a rigorous evaluation system, recognizing APEC ports that have consistently implemented environmental sustainability programs for at least two years. The program aims to enhance environmental awareness and understanding of green port development strategies, seeking to achieve a balance between economic development and environmental protection in the APEC ports community.
