Surging Success: Siargao's Tourism Rebound in 2023

Siargao, known as the country's premier surfing capital, has experienced a remarkable resurgence in tourism in 2023. The island saw a staggering 300% growth in tourist arrivals, marking a significant recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Super Typhoon Odette that devastated the region in previous years.

According to data from the Department of Tourism, Kagas, Siargao Island alone recorded more than 500,000 tourist arrivals in 2023, a remarkable increase from the 125,000 tourists logged in 2022. Of these tourists, 476,000 were domestic travelers, highlighting the island's appeal among local tourists, while almost 54,000 were foreign visitors, indicating a gradual return of international tourism to the island.

SOA Del Norte First District Representative, Bingo Matuga, has announced that preparations are underway for the island's hosting of the prestigious Siargao International Surfing Cup this year. The event is expected to further boost tourism and promote Siargao as a world-class surfing destination.

In addition to its recognition as the country's premier surfing capital, Siargao has also been recognized on a broader scale. The island ranked 10th among Asia's best islands in the 2023 CN Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards, further solidifying its position as a must-visit destination in the region.

The remarkable rebound of Siargao's tourism in 2023 is a testament to the resilience of the island's tourism industry and the allure of its natural beauty and world-class surfing spots. As Siargao continues to recover and rebuild, it is poised to reclaim its status as one of the Philippines' top tourist destinations, offering travelers an unforgettable experience amidst stunning natural landscapes and vibrant local culture.
