Enhancing Child Road Safety Through Health Literacy

In a recent seminar organized by the Department of Health (DOH) in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), experts and stakeholders convened to address the pressing issue of child road safety. The event underscored the importance of integrating road safety education into health literacy programs to mitigate the alarming statistics of road traffic accidents involving children.

Alarming Statistics

The Philippines has witnessed a concerning number of road traffic accidents, with 13,101 fatalities recorded in 2023 alone. Disturbingly, 1,044 of these victims were individuals under the age of 18, highlighting the vulnerability of children on the roads.

Seminar Highlights

The seminar featured discussions on the critical role of health literacy in promoting road safety among children. Experts emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between health and education sectors to implement effective programs that educate children about safe road practices.

Call to Action

The DOH and DepEd have called for a unified approach to enhance road safety education in schools and communities. By fostering awareness and providing children with the knowledge to navigate roads safely, the aim is to reduce the incidence of road traffic accidents involving minors.
