Smart Communications Donates Nine New Pergolas to Boost Tourism in General Luna, Siargao

As part of its continued commitment to supporting local tourism and community development, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), the wireless arm of PLDT, has recently turned over nine newly built pergolas at Paseo de Cabuntog in General Luna, Siargao Island.

General Luna, often referred to as the heart of Siargao, remains a vibrant destination and a key hub for travelers exploring the island’s iconic surf spots, scenic beaches, and thriving local culture. The addition of these pergolas is expected to enhance the overall visitor experience in the area, providing both locals and tourists with more comfortable and scenic rest stops in one of the island’s most visited public spaces.

“We’re happy to continue backing the municipality’s efforts to enhance tourism experience and welcome even more visitors, ultimately helping the local economy,” said Bernie Deatras, Area Head of Smart’s Mindanao Distributor Sales.

This initiative is part of Smart’s broader support for Siargao’s tourism scene. In 2023, the company also donated solar-powered lamps along the now-iconic Catangnan Bridge, which has since become a favorite spot for both sunset seekers and content creators.

Through these efforts, PLDT and Smart reaffirm their commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by empowering communities, fostering inclusive tourism, and creating more livelihood opportunities throughout the country.

As Siargao continues to recover and thrive post-pandemic, contributions like these help strengthen the island’s appeal as a sustainable and welcoming destination for all.
