Young Artists Honored in Surigao City Mural Painting Contest
Surigao City, June 11, 2025 – Today, local artists were celebrated at the awarding ceremony of the Mural Painting Contest, held at the Bonotan Area, Rizal Street in Barangay Washington, Surigao City. The event recognized the incredible talent of young artists who brought the city's heritage to life through vibrant murals.
Celebrating Culture and Heritage Through Art
Under the inspiring theme “Preserving Legacies, Building Futures: Empowering Communities through Heritage,” the contest showcased stunning murals that highlighted the rich culture and traditions of the Mamanwa people. Artists from various groups transformed public walls into powerful visual narratives, beautifully honoring Surigao’s indigenous roots.
This impactful event was a collaborative effort, organized by the Surigao City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office, in partnership with Guhit Pinas Surigao, the United Architects of the Philippines – Surigao Chapter, and JCI Surigao Nickel. Beyond showcasing artistic talent, the contest aimed to engage the youth and foster heritage awareness through community-based art, making it a truly meaningful initiative for the city.

The awarding ceremony saw the presence of notable figures including City Legal Officer Atty. Lex Silvosa, City Tourism Officer Roselyn Merlin, Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the City Building Official Architect Donjie B. Zerda, President of UAP Surigao and Deputy Vice President for Community of JCI Surigao Nickel Architect Crister Kent Y. Peñaloza, President of Guhit Pinas Surigao Mr. Russel Regala, and SK Member Clarisse Jamboy of Barangay Washington. Their presence underscored the significance of the event and the community's support for local arts and culture.
